Equality & Justice

Gender Equality & Justice

Challenging harmful social norms and advocating for safety and equality.

At Nzumari Community Initiative, we believe that Gender Justice is fundamental to the wellbeing, autonomy, safety, and future of young people. We work alongside girls, women, boys, and men to challenge harmful social norms, advocate for equality, and address sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Nairobi's underserved communities and informal settlements.

Why It Matters

Stigma, gender inequality, harmful cultural practices, gender-based violence, and limited access to support systems continue to negatively impact the lives and opportunities of many adolescents and young people. SGBV, discrimination, and unequal power dynamics contribute to exclusion, blocking youth from reaching their potential.

Empowering young people with knowledge, life skills, support networks, and safe spaces is essential for promoting healthier communities, preventing violence, advancing gender equality, and strengthening youth leadership and participation.

By actively challenging harmful patriarchal beliefs and fostering mutual respect, we build safer neighborhoods where everyone can participate, lead, and thrive.

Our Goal

To nurture informed, confident, and resilient young people who can advocate for gender equality, bodily autonomy, healthy relationships, and protection from violence and discrimination.

Methodology

Using theatre-in-education, community dialogues, and structured male mentorship to address unequal power dynamics.

Strategic Alliance

Male Engagement & Positive Masculinity

Nurturing boys and young men as key allies for sustainable change.

We recognize that sustainable change requires the meaningful inclusion of males in challenging harmful gender norms, preventing violence, and promoting respectful and equitable relationships. Through dialogue sessions, mentorship, and community conversations, we support boys and young men to reflect on masculinity, power, consent, emotional wellbeing, and responsibility in relationships.

Our approach promotes positive masculinity by encouraging empathy, accountability, non-violence, and respect for gender equality. We also equip young men with the knowledge and skills to become allies in preventing gender-based violence, supporting healthy relationships, and advocating for rights within their peer groups.

What We Do

We challenge inequalities and foster mutual respect through 5 focus areas.

Gender Justice & Rights Awareness

We support young people to understand and advocate for gender equality, human rights, dignity, and inclusion. Through community dialogues and awareness activities, we challenge harmful gender norms, discrimination, stigma, and unequal power dynamics that contribute to violence and exclusion.

Prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

We conduct community and youth-focused awareness sessions on GBV prevention, healthy relationships, consent, sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and harmful cultural practices. We also support referrals and linkages to appropriate psychosocial, legal, and health support services where necessary.

Male Engagement & Positive Masculinity

We intentionally engage boys and young men as key partners. Through dialogue sessions, mentorship, and community conversations, we support them to reflect on masculinity, power, consent, emotional wellbeing, and responsibility in relationships.

Youth Leadership, Advocacy & Participation

We support young people to become advocates and champions for gender justice. Through youth-led conversations, forums, and campaigns, we strengthen meaningful youth participation in shaping conversations, policies, and solutions affecting their lives.

Community Engagement & Social Norms Change

We engage parents, caregivers, community gatekeepers, educators, and duty bearers in conversations that promote supportive environments, accountability, and collective responsibility in advancing gender equality and human rights.
