Mental Health & Psychosocial Support
Youth mental health is our priority.
Young people today face increasing mental health challenges driven by unemployment, poverty, violence, social pressures, substance use, family instability, and limited access to affordable mental health services—particularly within underserved and informal settlement communities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 7 adolescents globally experiences a mental health condition, yet many young people do not access the support they need due to stigma, discrimination, limited awareness, and inadequate mental health services.
Why It Matters
Mental health challenges continue to affect many young people in informal settlements, yet stigma, limited access to services, poverty, violence, and social exclusion often prevent them from seeking support. In Kenya and across Africa, these challenges are further compounded by social and economic inequalities affecting young people.
At Nzumari Community Initiative, we believe that prioritizing youth mental health is essential for building resilient individuals, healthy relationships, safer communities, and inclusive social development. Our Mental Health & Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Program creates safe, accessible, and stigma-free spaces where young people can explore their emotional wellbeing, build resilience, and access support.
We work within communities to break stigma surrounding mental health by making conversations practical, relatable, and rooted in everyday experiences.
What We Do
We work within Nairobi communities to break stigma and equip youth with tools to cope, heal, and thrive.
Support Groups & Safe Spaces
We facilitate structured support group sessions where participants can openly share experiences, reflect, and receive peer support in a safe and non-judgmental environment. These spaces foster healing, connection, and a sense of belonging.
Mental Health Education & Awareness
We conduct interactive mental health awareness sessions on topics such as stress, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, emotional regulation, and wellbeing. Our approach simplifies mental health concepts and encourages early help-seeking.
Counseling & Psychosocial Support
We provide individual and group psychosocial support through trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches that promote healing, dignity, and emotional wellbeing.
Life Skills & Emotional Resilience
We equip young people with practical life skills including communication, stress management, anger management, problem-solving, goal setting, and resilience-building to help them navigate everyday challenges.
School-Based Mental Health Programs
We partner with schools to deliver age-appropriate mental health literacy sessions for children and adolescents. These programs help learners understand emotions, develop healthy coping skills, and seek support early while creating safer and more supportive learning environments.
Creative Approaches: Puppetry, Art & Edutainment
We use creative and expressive approaches such as puppetry, storytelling, art therapy, and interactive performances to make mental health conversations engaging and accessible. These methods help simplify complex topics, spark dialogue, and promote healing through creative expression.
Community-Based Mental Health Approaches
We integrate mental health into broader community programs including SRHR, parenting, livelihoods, gender, and youth empowerment initiatives to ensure holistic and community-centered support.
